If It's Groovy is 3 years old! We have a little blog hop to celebrate today and we hope you will enjoy as you make your way through each of The Groovy Chick's blogs showing projects made using the letters out of the word Birthday.

My letter from BIRTHDAY is R

I decided to make a Rosette, and place it on a birthday card. I made a super simple card, added the rosette, with a birthday embellishment in the middle, and I have a fun card to give. I am still new to making these, and I learn with each one :) I probably should have used a longer piece of paper with this, but that's the fun of learning...you learn as you go, and the next one is better :)

During the holidays I had a part-time job at Bloomingdales - fun, but I worked a little more than part-time and did not have any free time to scrap, so the only other R project I did was as a challenge in my facebook group...re-organize your scrap space. I didn't re-organize as much as I re-newed, or re-freshed it. Bought a couple of new organizers, and moved just a couple of things...I don't know about you, but the more I am in my room, I realize what I need closer, what I need "together", etc. Anyway, I did my first video and uploaded it to youtube (a first for me). All of my furniture is re-cycled ;)

Altered Clothespin

Here's what I did for my extra project at If It's Groovy this month

It's an altered clothespin :) Easy to do...cut some paper to size, file it down on the edges and ink them, and embellish! You can use these on a layout, or add a magnet to the back and use it to hang notes on the fridge, or clip a giftcard to it and attach it to a card :) TFL, Tammy

For our "You're so Negative" challange at If It's Groovy

A couple of years ago I played with my color settings on my camera at the fair. In the ferris wheel pics, I thought it was cool to focus on the blue of the sky. I used some Pink Paislee paper for the background, and a lot of fussy cut pieces of it too. But I also added a lot of non-traditional embellishments on this page...an inventory tag; a bingo marker; tickets; a milk cap; scrabble tiles; a paper clip; and washi tape. A little piece of Tim Holtz film tape, and a splatter of black acrylic paint and I'm done. Tammy

Family Coaster Magnet

This is what I did for my extra project this month at If It's Groovy

It's a coaster magnet! I used a chipboard like coaster (you know, for drinks?), covered it with paper and chipboard, filed down the edges and inked them, and then I glued a magnet to the back. These are easy and fun to make, and you can usually find the coasters at your local dollar store :) I used Cosmo Cricket paper and chipboard, and some Stickles. TFL, Tammy

Play Ball

At If It's Groovy this month, our challenge is to use an out of focus photo in our layout.

Can you see where my out of focus picture is?? I used it as a base, sort of a journal card, for the title "Play Ball". I thought that would be a fun way to use this picture that I probably otherwise wouldn't have even used :) I used Bella Blvd. paper and some buttons from my stash, and my Tim Holtz tiny attacher. This is the "you may kiss the bride" photo from my daughter's wedding. I made this for a Christmas present for them.

I used Lily Bee's "Head Over Heels", and a piece from "Memorandum" (sp?). I also used Studio Calico's pattern tissue flowers. And I broke into some of my etsy supplies ( http://www.etsy.com/shop/ScrappyDoodads?ref=si_shop ) for some vintage buttons...and vintage buttons on a card, scrabble tiles (for the MR & MRS title), a vintage milk cap, cameo button, and vintage "Lotto" game markers (lotto is like bingo) that mark the wedding date (5/18).

I recently found some missing photos from my daughter's musical theater shows. So before I started the next book (I believe I've already done FIVE!), I am catching up on some of the old ones. This was her second show, when she was 6 years old (she's 18 now). In this two pager (which is based on a PageMaps sketch), I used Cosmo Cricket - I love doing pages with one manufacturer, because matching is a no brainer, even when it's from different lines (this is two different ones, Nutmeg and Togetherness). I also added a paper doily that I misted, and the journaling page....well, I went to a teacher supply store and they had some of the writing paper on clearance :) I ran it through my vintage typewriter, and done :)

Scrappy Style

At If It's Groovy, our challenge this month is to do a layout using our "scrappy style"

When we were asked to do a layout with our "scrappy style", I struggled a little. I looked up styles, and didn't feel I fit into one sort of style. I change all the time, and go back to old ones, and love finding new styles to try. So I did mine to show my "scrappy formula" LOL! I have things I do on most of my pages no matter what style I use for that layout. 1. Two pagers. I always do two pagers...an old habit that is hard for me to break. 2. Sketches, I love following sketches. Sometimes I use a two page sketch, and sometimes I use two one page sketches that I think work together. I used a Pagemaps sketch for this, and I used it as a suggestion, and changed it up a little. I love Pagemaps :) Sometimes I like to scraplift too...which to me is like using a sketch. 3. I scrap in order. If I'm doing a book, I hate to scrap out of page order (I have OCD, and it hurts my head LOL!). This summer I decided to work on four books at a time, so that I don't get bored, but I still scrap each one in order. 4. I love to embellish, sometimes to the extreme! I love clustering my embellies too!

I used Little Yellow Bicycle and American Crafts on this layout.

(I had some weird foggy - socked in at the coast here - weather and some of my photos haven't been turning out so great, sorry...but TFL)

Happy Halloween

At If It's Groovy we are sharing our Halloween projects.

I bought this frame at Salvation Army - I love to repurpose things! It originally had a seashell in each frame, and was matted. These frames are only about 3"x3". I took the stuff out, I also repainted the frames (same color, they needed touching up). I used some Pink Paislee paper for the background - I don't really keep a lot of "themed" paper, and don't have ANY Halloween paper LOL, but I thought this orange was perfect. The letters are black glitter, and are also Pink Paislee. I used Stickles to make a spider web on the top one, and added a spider sticker. The middle one I just glued a bunch of googley eyes and chalked the edges. And the bottom one I added a cute Jolee's scarecrow sticker. My plan is to change it out for each season, let's see if I can keep up on that ;)

At If It's Groovy this month, our challenge is to do a page about out hometown.

I love where I live, the locals are nice, the tourists can be annoying, but it's all worth it! I live in Huntington Beach, California. We are the next beach north of Newport Beach...the beach city in the television series The O.C. My pictures show some of my favorite places: the middle two are the pier at sunset, and the Newland House...a historical home/museum...which is where I got married. Then, clockwise from the top: part of the boardwalk at the beach; the water tower house (yes, they made a house from an old water tower, it's right near where Sandra Bullock lived when she was still married to Jesse James); our famous naked surfer statue (people always try to dress him!); the harbor; the view under the pier; the wetlands (couldn't find pelicans this day, pelicans are my favorite); the main lifeguard tower on the pier; and a couple of lifeguard towers on the beach. When I took a picture of my layout, it looked flat, so I took another of it laying down to try and show the dimension.

I had the idea to do it like those dimensional collage frames, have you seen those? I like the way they look :) I used Bella Blvd. paper (Sunny Happy Skies) TFL, Tammy

Devil Rays

Based on this sketch at If It's Groovy. I loved this sketch! I had already done my son's "sports" book in 8x8, even bought an extra book so I could add more later...unfortunately, in high school the pictures are 8x10!!!! Oh well, it was one of my first books, so I don't mind re-doing this one ;) That being said, this is my now 15 year old when he was 5 and playing T-Ball--a league away from the Little League World Series champs LOL! We live in the same city, but there are at least 3 leagues here that I know of, we still rooted for them and are very proud that they are from Huntington Beach :) I used the colors of his team, with the blue cardstock and purple dot paper. The sports words paper is from Paper House Productions. I wanted to add a little something something, so I went through my scraps, and used my Fiskars triangle punch to make a little pennant banner.

But, I work in "two pagers" when I scrap, sometimes I mirror pages, sometimes I just make them flow, and sometimes I duplicate. So I used this sketch a second time, except this time I scrapped an OBJECT :) This is my son's name, it was cut from the T-ball team banner, and each of the boys got their's at the end of season party. I added the team name, and again used my Fiskar's triangle punch to make a little banner, and done!

What immediately inspired me were the clouds...I love clouds! I have been wanting to try a mixed media canvas for SO long, so I decided to do one for this project...MY FIRST EVER CANVAS :) I used a tutorial from Christy Tomlinson, whom I've always admired (from "she art" fame). This was fun, and I learned a lot (A LOT, what dries fast, what doesn't dry at all, for example, after 3 days of drying, you can still see the glue under the buttons still hasn't dried! Let glue dry before you Mod Podge over things ;) And a big one: paint fast over the first layer and "scrape" the paint off quicker!). But crafting is all about learning, and I am a permanant student LOL...can't wait to improve on myself and do another, and another :)

Postage stamp challenge...

at If It's Groovy this month, our challenge is to use postage stamps :)

I decided to do a vintage-y, layered tag (that I will most likely add to one of my Etsy kits). I used a piece of a vintage map, inked along the edges, as the background. I took a stamp that came on a piece of mail that day and peeled it off :) Can you see it behind the "EXPLORE" sticker? Then I layered stickers, stamped over them, and glued the three vintage buttons on it. I love layering! Thanks for looking!! Tammy

Even though she's 18 now, and I'm still not caught up on her musical theatre books (I'm about to start book 6 I believe LOL!), I recently came across some missing ones!! So I am doing the pages to add to the books when I feel like going through all the trouble of adding pages in the middle of already finished books ;) (not to mention that these were the first books I did, and my scrappy style has changed SO much!).

This was my daughter's 2nd show, when she was 6.

When I originally did this page, I did it on a brown background and couldn't stand it! So, I tore it off and put it on this pretty Core'dinations white out paper. TFL

Sketch Inspiration

My 18th anniversary was last Monday, so I figured it was about time to do my wedding album ;)

The last 3 pictures are of some of the guests...one guest in each photo has since passed away. So even though it was sad to think about, it was great to have these pictures from happier times :) So to my best friend from high school, Becky, my mother-in-law, Arlene, and my aunt's sister, Di, I miss and love you all!

I am now on If It's Groovy's design team!!! I was on their team a while ago, and I am so happy to be back with this awesome group!

Our challenge this month is to write a message on our hand...a saying, something we believe in...you get it, and take a picture and make a project with it...here's mine"

So what to write on my hand? That came pretty easy for me...I am always telling everyone to "think positive". I truly believe that if you put "positive" thoughts out, you get them back. It's all a matter of attitude :) I like the idea of vision boards. You put things on the board that you wish for, or desire. Seeing them and thinking about them can help you reach your goal. I went to Target and got a four pack of cork tiles. I used my Fiskar's cloud punches to punch some clouds and glued them down, and added a little Stickles. Then I glued a chipboard "dream" on top of that. Along the side I glued down a chipboard "wish", and with my I-Rock, I designed the rainbow swirls with some hot fix jewels. I poked holes in the top and threaded some ribbon through so I could hang it. Then I thumbtacked my picture of my hand with the words "think positive" on top. Now it was just a matter of tacking on some stuff I "desire" ;) I want to be a size 8 (got there in 2009, just need to focus!!!), I am going to a taping of "Ellen" soon, and I'm hoping we win tickets to the 12 Days of Christmas. I want a grandbaby :) And my dream for retirement is to buy a bike rental place in Maui...my hubby is a bike guy, I think it would be perfect! What are your dreams?? Tammy

Late Late Show experience :)

I had to think of a creative way to tell my story. You see, they don't allow cameras (or phones with cameras) inside. I knew this because I read the "must know" information on the website that gives away tickets to the Late Late Show...even though I wasn't going through them...I'm a rule follower (drive my husband nuts!), and wanted the details, what to wear, where to park, and so on. It's funny, because as you read the story, you will find out that some of this was useful, and some was not applied to us :)

I had last heard from my husband's cousin (Pooh's daughter LOL) the day before on facebook with basic information "his agent is getting you tickets; it's on the corner of Fairfax and Beverly; and be there by 2:45, is that cool". Of course it's cool, LOL! I was concerned that we hadn't heard more from her, but found out at the taping that she was going to call me that morning with more info...until she dropped her phone into her cereal bowl!

When we got to Hollywood, my husband was hungry. We parked at the Farmer's Market and went to Chipotle. In line in front of us were 3 of the stars from the Young and the Restless (a soap I've watched since I was a kid)...(it was the people who play Lily, Cane, and Devon). My 1st exciting thing of the day :)

Then we strolled over to the CBS studio, found the line for the audience, and told them we should be on the list (we didn't know, but it was worth trying, right?). At this point we thought we would get tickets and wait in line....(see next photo)...

Then the sweet page from the show, Danielle, put wristbands on us...walked us past the line, through the gates, past security, right through the metal detector (yes, we could have brought the camera, but I had no idea!), past the receptionist, up the elevator...into the GREEN ROOM! Woah, you know I'm just the niece-in-law of one of the guest's right?! LOL! They had food and drinks and stuff there for us. Jimmy (Jim Cummings, Pooh), and his two oldest daughters, Livia and Raleigh, came and said hi (they were in his dressing room). And then we were escorted into the show! After the show we went back to say our goodbyes...and I was about 10 feet away from Zooey Deschanel!!!! She's so pretty!

Since it was over at 5:30, and we were in Hollywood and live in the OC, we decided to let the rush hour traffic die down. We went next door to The Grove to walk around...

And we ate dinner (btw, I didn't know my husband was taking my picture, so that explains my face LOL!)

We drove around and acted like tourist down Melrose...

and this is dark, but to explain why we took this photo...

If you've ever seen the shows "Inked" or "Tattoo Highway", you know Thomas Pendelton. He is a good friend of my husband's, they've known each other since they were kids. When they did "Tattoo Highway", my husband and Thomas became business partners (shirts and accessories), we were even on the original pilot episode of the show. The lady who owns this shop is a friend of Thomas' and bought stuff from our company, so Thomas, my husband, and another friend, Anthony, went to do her sign on her request. The company, Ministry of Ink, for many reasons is not around anymore. We still have inventory :( Our biggest client at the time was Hot Topic, but that was a one time thing, and the show only lasted one season, so it just didn't get the free advertising we were hoping for, oh well :) It was a fun experience anyway!

Okay...wow, that was long LOL! But it was a fun day, up there with the day I met the Jonas Brothers with my middle daughter (another long story!), and Pink and Carey Hart (through Thomas). And really, I am just a normal, stay at home mom, who happens to sometimes have out of the ordinary experiences!!!

Monochromatic...well, sort of :)

I had done this project for a DT that I am not on anymore, so I waited till my term was up before posted it (out of respect for them). It's a monochromatic project. I decided to do a collage frame. I had this white frame, so I decided to go with shades of white, cream and brown. I know, I know, I cheated a bit with the touches of pink, but that's me...I love little surprises :) It's my "happy" collage. Thanks for letting me share, Tammy

supplies used were all from my stash. I believe the background paper is DCWV Luxury stack, and that the two brown dot flowers are Making Memories, as well as the brown glitter letters, the butterfly, and the metal piece in the clock. The clock is Heidi Swapp, and the bird cage is Recollections. The music note stamp is "Stamps by Judith". That's all I can remember, as they were out of their packages ;)

On another note...I will go into details on my exciting Hollywood adventure tomorrow - we had unexpected family, my sister and my husband's sister, drop in over the weekend and I didn't get to it (that's what happens in the summer when you live at the beach!)

Just got home from Hollywood where we got VIP treatment at The Late Late Show (Craig Ferguson). Watching my husband's uncle, who is a voice actor, on the show. He is "Winnie the Pooh" and was promoting the new movie...

I don't have pics from the show (no cameras allowed), but I will do a little story pictorial tomorrw ;)

You know how you "like" things on facebook? Well, I "like" some of my favorite scrapbook companies. One of them I "like" is Adornit Carolee's Creations , and I was pleasantly surprised today when they posted a layout I did using their products that I had posted at scrapbook.com here . It was previously posted on my blog here , and was for my DT challenge at Let's Get Peachy here .

Vacation Mini Book

My husband got me a "Your Story Photo" mini book binder thing :) for Christmas.  I wanted it because you don't always want to do a big book for everything, and I thought this would be good for all those "mini" things...small vacations, things you didn't take a ton of photos of, you know what I mean.  So, for my first book(s), I decided to do our summer of 2005...we did a mini vacation in San Diego (which is only a couple hours away from us), and another long weekend in Las Vegas.  It ended up being 2 books when I finished, and I did have to reinforce the binding with some glue, 'cause I still made them too thick LOL!  Live and learn.  I'm not going to bore you with all the pages, but thought I'd just show you some fun tips:

Even though the books come with cute shiney covers, you can still decorate them.  Also, you can see I used tabs and stuff that sticks out of the book.

Use a postcard as a page of the book...I pick up postcards all the time now when I go somewhere :)

To fit of photos on a page, I used my circle punch, and cut some of them long and skinny.

I did a "pull out" with five pictures...4 are back to back, and the 5th is the anchor on this page.

And on this page I did a "fan" of 3 pictures.

two challenges...

I did this page for the scrapbook.com Cosmo Cricket challenge....90% Cosmo, twist this month is to use "borders" (I went crazy with two border punches on Cosmo paper)...also, the background paper is Core'dinations...from their Cosmo Cricket line.

I also based this on Sketchy Thursdays sketch this week:

Thought I'd share a couple of pics from my weekend...I'd been sick all week, and still not feeling great, but my DH wanted to get me out. We always forget how lucky we are to live where we do, and sometimes we just like to explore our backyard, so to speak ;)

He printed posters for the Sawdust Festival in Laguna Beach, so we had free passes to get in...it's a place where a bunch of "artists", or people who call themselves artists (I say this because while some was beautiful, a lot was just juvenile, I could do better, and the prices were, let me say it this way...they thought highly of themselves LOL!). Still, it was fun to walk around for free...then we walked around downtown Laguna for a bit and grabbed ice cream:

Then on the way home, we stopped at Balboa Island...unfortunately it was Sunday, so the shops were all closing up :( So we just took a short walk:

for me, it was just good to get out of the house, it was also good to have the room stop spinning long enough for me to scrap!

Recipe Challenge

This month at Get Peachy we have a recipe challenge...click for details of the recipe ;)

For my recipe, I used these ingredients in my layout: inked, used buttons, distressed, used a punch, tearing, and fussy cutting.

This past month has been a serious blur to me...and my creative mojo suffered! Between my youngest turning 15, my oldest getting married, my middle one turning 18 and graduating - throw in an unexpected death on graduation day...and the days following full of family get togethers - some for the graduation celebration, and then for the memorial. THEN I got the flu! Ugh! I even had to giveaway my much anticipated ticket to finally see Mamma Mia! I mean, I'm glad I did, 'cause I never would have made it through the show, but so bummed I didn't see it :(

Anyway, I woke up this morning feeling better, and maybe feeling crafty, we'll see :)

Oh, also in the midst of all the madness, my oldest got a promotion, and my middle one got a job at our favorite hole in the wall Mexican food joint around the corner! Yay...maybe now I will start to see less of her open palm (waiting for money or my atm card LOL!).

Vacation Memory Jars

For my "outdoor" project at Let's Get Peachy I thought a memory jar would be fun...I've always wanted to do one. Then I was on the phone with my oldest, Jessica, one day and she said "I want to do one of those jars where you put stuff from your vacation in"!!! Was she reading my mind???? So, she came down for a visit, and brought stuff with her to put in it.

My 1st step is collecting what I think I will use...I went to Goodwill and bought a couple of jars, she liked this one, a tag, some hemp (we didn't end up using that), and my Seven Gypsies pre-stamped stamp, and the stuff from her trip to Napa Valley:

And here's what we came up with, notice that instead of the hemp, we used some Jillibean Soup bakers twine, and she wrote with my Zig Millennium pen on the tag. We basically just fit the things in, in a way that she liked:

She may add a few more things when she gets home.

It was so easy to do, but in my head I wanted to do something else...but this one was for her. So, I thought I'd make myself one.

So, I gathered my stuff. I used the other jar from Goodwill. I found a photo of my husband and my younger two, Courtney and Hunter, from our trip a few years ago up the coast. This was at our tour of the 17 Mile Drive in Pebble Beach. I also had the pamphlet still. The magnets were from there, but just for inspiration, the shells I had, and the sand, well let's just say that living 1/4 mile away from the beach made that happen LOL ;)

Here's what I came up with, I also used some K&Company ribbon, and rub-ons from my stash. I matted the photo to some cardstock...I had to loosen it from the paper when I went to put it in the jar, 'cause it wrinkled up when I bent the cardstock. On the back of the cardstock I placed some stuff from the pamphlet. I used some tape, I think by Me and My Big Ideas, to help hold that in place inside the jar:

I put rub-ons on the picture and on the jar. And, if you use a jar like this and put sand in it...DON'T pick it up by the lid!!!! Lesson learned LOL!

I used the line "where the sea is blue". And I was inspired by the circle shapes of the cookies, so I stamped lots of circles around and under the photos of the turtles. I used Imaginisce's Splash Dance, and the journal sticker is Scooter's vacation.

Mother's Day present

Yes, I know mother's day was a week ago LOL! My daughter is getting married Wednesday, so I will see my mom there...gave me some extra time. I previously posted the layout I made. I made this card to match:

it's based on a Page Maps sketch, and I did it for the Bo Bunny card challenge.

I needed a bag for the gift, but didn't want to go buy one, so I took this bag and altered it to match:

wanted to share what I did on NSD. I mostly did challenges at scrapbook.com

first had to make a card, so I made this for my middle daughter who is graduating next month...in her school colors:

The next one you had to feature your favorite tool in your scraproom....I did a quick 8x8. Personally, I don't like challenges where I don't make a layout or project that I will actually use. I mean really, what am I going to do with this page LOL?! But it was quick ;)

Next you had to do one with a lot of journaling. I don't normally like my handwriting, but did it anyway! I don't know if I like the kraft background or not, but what's done is done (I'm not one of those "go back and re-do pages" kind of girl...I've got 20 years of memories to work on people LOL!):

Then, thankfully the next challenge was for vacation/getaway pics. YAY, I always do two pagers...not always matching 2 pagers, just same papers and such, so it gave me the chance to do the 2nd page to the one above:

The last one was to include a handmade flower. So I used one of mine made from pattern tissue. This is my mom's mother's day present:

Then I spent the next 3 days re-organizing my scraproom. Now I gotta catch up on DT projects...OH, and my oldest is getting married next Wednesday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YIKES!

I decided to do a project I've done many times, because it is familiar to me...an altered frame :) I am doing a simple one for you to show the basics of how I do them :) I will go step by step and show you photos (lots LOL!). Let me start by showing you some of the ones I've made in the past:

Yes, it was my "go to" present for a while ;) so this is the first I've made in quite a bit, but it is a fun, inexpensive project...it just takes a little patience for the drying time :)

For me, the first step is picking my paper...this time it was after I decided (rather, my 17 year old decided LOL) which embellishment I was going to use. She liked the chipboard rainbow "Daydreamin" on this K&Company sheet...so I picked some coordinating paper from the same company (I added other pieces later):

I use a complimenting color to paint the outer and inside edges of the frame, after removing the glass (or in the case of my super inexpensive Ikea frame, plastic LOL):

Normally I use one piece of paper, but I decided last minute to kind of "collage" this one..you attach the paper to the frame with Mod Podge, I also like to use a brayer to smooth it as much as possible and remove any bubbles:

Let it dry. Then put it upside down on a cutting mat and use an exacto to trim the inside square and any extra on the outside:

next I always go back and file the paper to make it even to the frame...I have OCD, so you may not feel the need to do this:

after that, you will have to touch up your paint. I also like to either ink or paint along the edges where the paper meets the frame...it gives it a finished look. This time I painted...a little sloppy, 'cause I wanted that kind of look :)

I left my embelishments on there backers, and just set them on the frame to see what I was going to use and where I was going to place them:

The reason I do that is so that I know if I plan to Mod Podge (btw, I used hard coat on this) over the embellishments. I decided not to this time...because the chipboard pieces had their own "shiny-ness" that I wanted to work with, and not cover.

Then, Mod Podge over the paper and sides. You can do as many coats as you like, or have time for. I did 5...this was just because I wanted to see if this helped take the paint lines out of the Mod Podge (it didn't), which is one of my pet peeves with Mod Podge ;) I let it dry an hour between each coat (I did chores in between LOL!):

After that I let it dry overnight, and then added my embellishments...I added glue to the adhesive on the chipboard to hold them better...here's the finished frame:

May Day

Happy May Day! Do you know what May Day is? I didn't - it's not really celebrated here on the West Coast...I read it's celebrated in the mid-west. Of course I'd heard of May Poles and May Baskets, but I didn't really know what they were about. Here's the condensed definition of May Day (found on various online sites):

May 1st, often called May Day, just might have more holidays than any other day of the year. It's a celebration of Spring. It's a day of political protests. It's a neopagan festival, a saint's feast day, and a day for organized labor. In many countries, it is a national holiday.

And here's where some of the traditions came from:

Bringing in the May

In medieval England, people would celebrate the start of spring by going out to the country or woods—"going a-maying"—and gathering greenery and flowers, or "bringing in the may." Another English tradition is the maypole. Some towns had permanent maypoles that would stay up all year; others put up a new one each May. In any event, the pole would be hung with greenery and ribbons, brightly painted, and otherwise decorated, and served as a central point for the festivities. In the 19th century, people began to braid the maypole with ribbons by weaving in and out in the course of a dance. Other later traditions include making garlands for children and the crowning of the May Queen.

Roots of May Day celebration in America:

The Puritans frowned on May Day, so the day has never been celebrated with as much enthusiasm in the United States as in Great Britain. But the tradition of celebrating May Day by dancing and singing around a maypole, tied with colorful streamers or ribbons, survived as a part of the English tradition. The kids celebrating the day by moving back and forth around the pole with the the streamers, choosing of May queen, and hanging of May baskets on the doorknobs of folks -- are all the leftovers of the old European traditions.

At Let's Get Peachy this month, my altered arts DT assignment was to do something for May Day. I decided to do a May Basket. My 1st attempt, a rolled up paper cone to hang on a doorknob filled with candy, was cute as a child's project, but I did not like it as a project from me. Then I saw that someone made one from a mason jar...a mason jar vase that hangs from a doorknob! FUN! I couldn't wait to do this. I looked up lots of fun examples of what has also become a hot trend for wedding centerpieces, mason jar vases. I wanted mine to be shabby chic...to remind me of the display windows where my oldest works (Anthropologie). Here's what I did:

I took a mason jar (I am always saving these from spaghetti sauce...my daughter uses them all the time to stuff with candy for her friends, she alters them too...chip off the old block LOL). I had some craft wire on hand,

so I figured where was a good spot for the "handle" to hang on the doorknob, and twisted there,

then I wrapped the two wires around, and at the front I did two "u"s, to connect, and go back around (to make it sturdy)...wow, Just realized how old my hands look LOL ;)

then I wrapped them around the handle a few times, and twisted them. I covered this later with a piece of twine and a little flower. After I did this part, just to make sure it was secure enough, I filled the jar with water and hung it on my bedroom door for a couple of hours...it worked, whew!

I attached some lace to a piece of burlap that I cut to fit the jar, and hot glued it on, folding over the top piece so it would be finished.

Then, I added the big flower...which is a remnant from a shirt I had :) and the little flower in the center from my stash, which I also added one of those to the handle and another to the back. I added an extra piece of purple tulle to the center of the flower too.

Then I added a home made "Happy May Day" tag to it and ta da! Here it is with flowers. I like that I can change the tag up, you know, for whatever season...or maybe hang a cute charm. What do you think? Thanks for letting me share,

Earth Day!!!

To celebrate Earth Day today at Let's Get Peachy I decided to recycle, or rather "upcycle" a pattern. You see, I went through a sewing phase years ago, I even sewed all the stuff for my son's nursery when I was pregnant and "nesting". But I did not love it. But I do love scrapbooking...so why not make some cute embellishments to use for that from these patterns I've had laying around for years (I think a lot of them were given to me). I've seen so many of these embellishments lately...so I did a little research and read a couple of tutorials, and came up with this version. First I pulled some of my flower punches. I kept the pattern folded...this will be trial and error for you as to how many layers to keep it, but the tissue is too thin as one layer to punch. I even saw one person that made a cardstock template and cut the tissue, but this worked well for me.

Then I layered them (you will see different ways I did them below). When I layered them, I would ink some of the layers with my Distress Ink (Vintage Photo), just here and there. I dabbed a tiny glue between each (if you use brads, you won't need to do that). Then, as the "center", I recycled again :) I have a lot of buttons that I've saved from clothes...some are the extras you get with new clothes, and the ones on the two in the second row (below), were actually cut from clothes I was throwing away - so I didn't have to sew through those!!! On the ones I did sew through, I even used my scrap pieces of thread....less trash, more recycling. The last two on the bottom row (below), were punched from the instruction paper in the pattern...and then I misted them with Tattered Angels spray and scrunched them.

Now I have some brand new embellies to use on my pages :)

that I will be around a lot more next month!!! I am frantically trying to get my Etsy store going before the blog hop. I will be selling embellishment kits with a lot of ephemera, trims, and some handmade items. But to get the trim, I had to sell off some of my excess scrapbook supplies. And plan a trip to the fabric district with a friend that knows the area...yikes, she broke her ankle in three places this last weekend!!! Fortunately my BFF is her roomie, so she's going to get the "places to go" and we are making a trip Friday, since she has to pick up her daughter at LAX that evening anyway...so it will be a fun girls day!

On other "personal stuff going on" news...Courtney is on a spring break trip in GREECE thanks to grandpa. I've gotten two emails, and she's having a blast. My nephew Donivan had surgery yesterday, so my niece Danielle has been here a couple of days, and she and Hunter went to Disneyland yesterday and California Adventure today. Hopefully Donivan will heal and therapy will go well. For those of you that don't know, Donivan is a "non-verbal" autistic child/adult now :) He turned 19 this year! And because he's non-verbal, he was unable to express where his pain was...and it was not noticed until he started walking odd this year, and my sister could tell he was in pain, so the doctor tested and tested and found a rare form of arthritis in his hip...thus the surgery at Stanford. Keep him in your thoughts for a speedy recovery :)

Enough rambling...I don't share personal stuff often here, so when I do I have to explain too much LOL!

I made this birthday card for the challenge. I did the "masking" by punching clouds from scrap paper. I misting once with all of them on the card, then I went back and removed a couple of them, and on a few others I moved them just a bit, then I misted again. I made the banners by punching stars from some of my scrap paper, and cutting the points off to make little triangles.

Did you know that Grammar Day is March 4th? Well, in honor of that day, as a DT member at Let's Get Peachy, we were to make a layout with a single word, and the definition of that word. Here's what I did:

During our trip to Hawaii in 2009, as we were walking back to our car after one of our stops to view one of the many beautiful sights there, my daughter Courtney saw this pet goat on a leash in somebody's driveway. She made me grin, because she "had" to take a picture with him! She is super silly sometimes...I love it! So, here's Courtney with her new friend somewhere in Hawaii :)

Celebrating National Craft Month!

March is National Craft Month, so in celebration of this awesome month, I decided to alter the word "CREATE" for my scraproom :) I found these letters in the dollar bin at Michael's a little while ago, and was so happy to find the right ones to spell it...I think I got the last two "E's" LOL! I started by picking out the paper I wanted to use (this is always the hardest part for me), I used We R Memory Keeper's "White Out"...love the pretty bright colors:

Next I just played with the letters on the paper to decide where to cut before I did it:

now, I placed each letter reversed on the back side of the paper and traced it:

Then I cut them out:

The next step is to Mod Podge (I used hard coat this time) on the back of the paper and place them onto the letters....I used a new Mod Podge brayer I bought myself:

Here they are all glued on:

Now, when I cut them from the paper, they weren't a perfect match to the wood letters, so I filed the excess paper down:

after filing, I noticed that some of the white paint on the wood came off...I kind of didn't mind, it gave them a distressed look, but to finish it off a little I used some watered down Kaiser white acrylic paint (which I thought would go well with the distressed whiteness of this paper):

In the next step I had to decide which embellishments I was going to use on each letter, and which ones I was going to Mod Podge over--I do this to seal things on, and for items like this, that I am going to hang, it makes for easier cleaning. You can see the on the first "E" and on the "T" I didn't add the embellishments yet, because I didn't want to Mod Podge over the Butterfly (from my stash), or the charm and hemp (from my stash). The "C" I used rhinestones from my stash, the "R" I cut a piece from my Bazzill "Just the Edge" cardstock strips and sewed through the top to make a banner, on the "A" I used a couple of raffle tickets and a metal turn and a pearl from my stash, and the last "E" various buttons from my stash...all which I want to Mod Podge over:

and then I put two coats of Mod Podge on top (note that on the one with the rhinestones, I did wipe it off the very top of the rhinestones so they can still sparkle):

Then I added the embellishments to the last two letters and ended up with this:

For our monthly challenge at Let's Get Peachy, w went to this website:

Roll the dice

There were "3" dice to roll, and then we created a lo using the dice this way:

The first dice represents how many pics to use.

The second dice represents how many patterned papers you will use.

The third dice is how many embellishments you will use.

here was my roll:

So I did this layout:

I decided to do a lot of fussy cutting. The clouds were all cut from one piece of patterned paper (except the small blue ones, which were punched from a solid blue piece), the cloud border from another, and the rainbow from the third. My 2 embellishments are the metal word and the chipboard frame. Now, there's a funny reason why the pictures are cut...I had cut them down to 4x4 size, but then realized that part that I cut off of the one of my son was cool...so I added pieces back in...sometimes mistakes make a fun layout :) This is in Laupahoehoe point in Hawaii...there was a Tidal Wave there a very long time ago, such a beautiful place that had a horrible tragedy. This was based on a Page Maps sketch.

When I did this, I wanted a second page (I work in twos, but don't always do them as "2 page" designs, kwim? LOL)...so that week Let's Scrap had this sketch:

it was a card sketch, but I did a layout:

I LOVE to cluster things...so this may look busy to you, but I had so much fun doing it! I won a "freebie Friday" prize at Making Memories blog a few weeks ago, so I had fun using it here...then I added just a touch of color to it. This was this year's Christmas picture, and I'm going to hang it---it includes my future son-in-law this year, since they got engaged last August :)

I used this week's sketch at Let's Scrap I totally made it my own LOL

I hope LOL! Whenever I think I'm going to scrap all weekend, my mojo is gone! But tomorrow my DH and DS are going snowboarding, and my DD has rehearsals all weekend (and finally can drive herself)...and other than a trip to Target (and maybe Michael's tomorrow if I want to use the 50% off coupon), I have nothing else to do! I think I'm going to use this week's sketch at Let's Scrap and scrap the holiday picture of the kids that I send out at Christmas...and it includes my now future son-in-law, who I consider one of my kids now :) Wish me luck...I've got the paper picked out, that's always the hardest part for me!

here's my take:

on a side note...my background cardstock is Core'dinations...I "embossed" from behind the fishes, clouds and border and sanded the front. The other little fishes (yes, I know that's not correct grammar LOL!)

are fussy cut from the Cosmo Cricket paper.

Here's how I made them...

I found a tutorial a long time ago on Two Peas in a Bucket by Tia Bennett, and knew I wanted to do it someday :) So, I had saved these clamshells from some scrapping products:

On the first one I used my little square punch on another piece of paper and added a gem (I believe it's Imaginisce too...I've had them a while and have thrown the package away):

Then I used the product paper inside as a template to cut the backer paper...I love that this paper is double sided so that I can add a "to" and "from" on the back:

and here's what it looked like before I put the Smarties inside:

I made this:

It's my husband's little cousin...she got married in Maui last year, and I missed her shower, so I've been wanting to make something as a wedding gift...when she posted this picture on facebook, I knew I had to use it! I tried to mimic (sp?) the flower-y thing on her hat with that bow/flower/pearl thing. I may end up changing something/or adding a flower? I don't want to distract too much from this awesome picture!! But when I make things for a gift, I get nervous about it, KWIM?

*update:

So, I haven't glued it down yet...but I added a little tulle bow to the flower on the upper left. My daughter and I didn't like the look of that flower...which was added there to cover a mistake I made LOL! When I removed the mistake, I ripped the paper, so I put the flower to cover it...but my daughter and I both thought it looked exactly like what it was, an afterthought! But, now I can't remove that 'cause I used super industrial strength glue on it...can you imagine the mess I would leave! My daughter and I have been looking at it all night and day, and today she said "what if you add another of those bows, but smaller, to that flower to make it look like it fits in", and I think it works! But this time I am waiting before I glue it down. I think I have a future scrapper on my hands :)

Which is also for this month's Cosmo Cricket challenge at scrapbook.com . The challenge this month: This month I'd like to see three of my favorite techiniques. Inking, distressing and layering (whether it be paper layering or embellishment layering)!

So, I guess it will be a late gift, but I am so glad to get it done...we had a sad night here last night after a run to the emergency vet with Courtney's chinchilla, Bob Saget...he passed right when we got there :( He was the sweetest thing ever, and we will miss his adorable face.

I've been working on these, and finally finished them all. Saw the tutorial for these on the Scrapbook & Cards Today Blog AND on the Sassafras Lass Blog...found a seller on ebay for the supplies (and she also had a tutorial), and I came up with these glass tile necklaces (and gift boxes):

These first three are for my oldest daughter, my sister, and my niece...only I couldn't decide which one for which...so I am going to let them pick based on the box! Except I'm the one that know's that the box gives a "peek" of sorts as to what is inside ;)

For my mom...I am bummed that the subtley patterned paper doesn't really show...but, I like the way it came out. This stamp is actually a "MOMENTS" stamp that I cut to say "MOM"...easy peasy!

This one I took a picture of my friend's kids when they were little...this is for my best friend that I've written about who lost her son to cancer this year. On the back I put a picture of them older...but the hardware for the necklace chain blocks part of their faces...eeerrrggghhhh! I hope she likes it.

So, both my daughters are very crafty (I love it!). My oldest wasn't lucky enough to be living at home when I fully threw myself into scrapping, and my middle one has been...especially now that my scraproom is in the middle of the house...part of their playroom/tv room! I have been training her to "ask before you use", and she's learning, but seems to think that if I'm in bed, it's okay to cut into mom's brand new paper!!!! But, you can't get mad when she does this for her friend's Christmas presents:

The one on the far left is not finished...it's the back...on the back of each of these she used my little alphabet stamps to stamp each one of their names! She couldn't wait for me to finish mine so she could see if there were enough glass tiles left to make her's! Cute, huh?!

Card for Grandma

I made this card for my husband's grandma in Ohio. It is my lifted version of Rae Barthel's card on page 22 of Paper Crafts November/December 2010 issue. I used papers from my recent Paper Poppy kit purchase.

When you take the tag out, it looks like this....I put this year's Christmas pic on it (taken on Thanksgiving this year). It's my three kids and my oldest's fiance'.

Cosmo Cricket card inspired by Paper Crafts Magazine

So, when I bought my PaperCrafts November/December issue I fell in love with just about every project. Not being able to decide which to try first, I decided to work my way from beginning to end (hopefully!). Here's the first card I made inspired by them:

I used Cosmo Cricket Mitten Weather, among some other stash. The tape is actually first aid tape that I inked a greenish color and then stamped with snowflakes. The stitching was supposed to be sloppy, but quickly became that way without me trying because my sewing machine did not like sewing through that tape! Lesson learned :)

I just wanted to show here how on the inside of my card I used one of the Mitten Weather border strips.

I made this layout:

This is my youngest niece, Sophia, who turned 2 today. Her mom had posted this pic on her facebook last week of her trip to the pumpkin patch with her little preschool. Each kid was allowed to have a pumpkin, whatever pumpkin they wanted, but they had to carry it back by themselves...she picked a huge one, and her mom didn't think she'd make it...but she did! It's funny to think that this little girl that only weighed 3lbs 13ozs when she was born picked a huge pumpkin and carried it back all by herself!

some details:

that foam board with the canvas that the layout is pinned to is the back of the shadowbox that I put this in.

I sewed around the words "pumpkin patch", and also used the rub-on acorns over the acorns on the paper, to cover the cut in the paper. Can you see my bling, love my I-Rock! I cut the banner from the Apple Cider "Cinnamon Sticks" paper.

I lifted the pumpkin paper piecing idea from http://lilybeedesign.blogspot.com/2010/10/creating-pumpkin-paper-piecing-from.html ...see the stem? It's a tree cut from the Apple Cider "Fall in Love" paper.

Nike 6.0 Motel No Tell

I live in a beach city in California. We have a lot of sporting events at our beach, near the pier, especially in the summer (like AVP volleyball and the US Open for surfing). This summer, Nike took over one of the old motels on Pacific Coast Highway, here's the link: Nike Motel No Tell if your curious. So my son, his friend, and my husband went a few times. They had one room that my husband said was tiny, so he thinks it used to be like the supply closet or maid closet or something, and they turned it into a photo booth!!! So I decided to make a layout for my son to hang on his lockers in his room to remember the summer.

I used (the left side) of this sketch from Sketchy Thursdays :

and I made this:

I used some paints for my husband's RC cars on the background paper, and a sharpie and white pen, to try and copy the graffiti on the wall behind them in the pics. I printed the logo from the website and cut it out and added stickles to try and make it look like a lit up motel sign. TFL

Got 20 of these finished today! This is what the bride requested. Metallic lavender background and ivory on top. She wanted this kind of ribbon, I liked the tulle, but I think this worked with her theme better I guess. I was so happy that I found Core'dinations (gemstone and regular) ON SALE at JoAnn's of all places for .25 a 12x12 sheet!!!!!!!!!! AND my JoAnn's just remodeled, so they actually had a lot of variety! And it's only like a mile from my house, so I guess it will be my first stop from now on ;)

Imaginisce Sketch Challenge

here's my take:

First, I have to say, I never thought I would use "fall" themed paper on a Hawaii layout! All products are Imaginisce except the thread, the cardstock background, and the paper the title was printed on.

This was a series of errors that I made work in the end. First, I wish I picked the slightly darker blue background paper that I originally pulled, but too late, I had already glued down the rectangles that I cut too small, and sewed with too light of a yellow thread, and because I cut them too short, I filled in between the bottom two with what is supposed to look like a leaf banner on a branch, ummm I tried LOL, then in between the top two, I hand journaled, but hated the way it looked, so fortunately I had the chipboard "warm memories" to cover that, then I had used some epoxy letters for the title that didn't fit, but in removing them I messed the paper up a little, so I had to print the title on cardstock that kept having trouble going through my (old) printer!

But, in the end I ended up liking it anyway! Thanks for looking!

Got back to scrapping! Did this yesterday, but didn't take pics till today (and it's been overcast all day). Finally posting after we went inland to Orange and did their "Street Faire" in their downtown. Lots of food...had two yummy frozen margaritas, some fish and chips on "England" street, and these rosette cookie thingies - I think they were on "Dutch" street...kinda like a mini funnel cake!!!! And brought home baklava (less one bite!) from "Greek" street...and, the one I can't wait for....6 mini cupcakes from "The Perfect Circle Cupcakery"....I guess they were on "Cupcake Wars".

Oh...got lost in the food talk....here's this week's sketch from Let's Scrap :

I used Bo Bunny, some Dotted Swiss paper (I forgot that I had purple Bo Bunny Double Dot!!!!), and I finally used my I-Rock (with my hot hot fix rhinestones I already had at home). It really is a lot less messy than having to glue each down...takes just as much time, but I like the no mess part :)

o, my husband is in one of his (biggest) client's offices. One of the girls comes in and asks if he can print table numbers for her friend's wedding reception (he's a printer). After the conversation explaining that it isn't cost efficient for him to do it, the other girl looks at my husband and says "are you thinking what I'm thinking?", he says "yeah", and then she says to the first girl "oh my God, Eddie's wife is a scrapbooker...you should see the Christmas cards she makes! She can probably do something!".

Well, I've never done anything like this...but it's his biggest client...so I made my first sample attempt today:

I used my slice to negative cut the number.

Then I tried a different one. I don't know if I like this one as much...could just be the paper I used. But it gives a different ribbon idea.

yesterday's post I showed the left side I got done for the sketch at Let's Scrap , and today I got the right side done (in between all the teenage traffic I had here...is it September yet???)

Hunter is on the right (the other two aren't mine...but they were all so cute)...they are playing with "sleeping grass", which I would kind of compare to a venus fly trap. The things you learn at a coffee farm :)
